You woke up sure they were really there

For a moment, your grandmother is still in the room. Her voice. Her perfume. The way she tilted her head right before she said something important. It felt less like a dream and more like a visit.

Then your feet hit the floor, and the whole thing starts to fade.

If you have had one of these visitation dreams, you know the questions they leave behind. Was that real? Are they okay? Is there something they still want me to know?

Of all the signs from deceased loved ones, dreams may be the most personal. Yet most of us file them under “just a dream” and move on, quietly wondering. Dream teacher Robert Moss suggests a bolder response: pay attention, go back, and ask.

What is a psychopomp?

The psychopomp meaning is simpler than the word suggests. It comes from Greek and roughly means “guide of souls.” In many traditions, a psychopomp helps souls travel between the world of the living and the world of the dead. Shamans have filled this role for thousands of years. Robert teaches it as a skill you can explore through your own dreaming, not a title reserved for mystics on mountaintops.

About Robert Moss

Robert Moss is the creator of Active Dreaming, his original blend of modern dreamwork and shamanic journeying. His relationship with other worlds started early. He survived three near-death experiences as a child in Australia. He later lectured in ancient history at the Australian National University before becoming a bestselling novelist, journalist, poet, and independent scholar.

A turning point came in the late 1980s. After moving to a farm in upstate New York, he began dreaming in a language he didn’t know. It turned out to be an archaic form of Mohawk. Those experiences shaped the method he now teaches around the world, including a three-year training for Active Dreaming teachers.

He has written more than a dozen books on dreaming, shamanism, and imagination. They include Conscious Dreaming, Dreamgates, Dreaming the Soul Back Home, and his memoir, The Boy Who Died and Came Back. His newest is Growing Big Dreams.
